The victory rolls pin-up hairstyle

Victory rolls – an eyecatching hairstyle you probably know from pin-up girls and rockabilly fans. With some practice this hairstyle is quite easy and fast to create, just check out some tutorials on youtube. I recently started to wear one victory roll on my head but was quite surprised when I by mistake stumbled upon the origin of the victory rolls´ name.

Victory rolls (vítězné roličky) – celkem ikonický účes žen vyznávajících pin-up vzhled a fanynky rockabilly.

This hairstyle was popular in 1940s/50s, which is an era around the WW2. The term „victory roll“ was originally used for a trick of pilots flying the figthter planes. Thus to celebrate the end of WW2 (and the victory) this term was adopted by women who called by this term their hairstyle with rolls. One can also say that the letter V for victory appears when woman rolls up two victory rolls on the top of her head.

During the WW2 a shoulder length hair (or even a bit longer to the blades) became popular. In the previous two decades much shorter hair was popular. I guess it was because women did not have the time to take care of their hair and cut it often because of the WW2. More curlier look became popular. During the day women often hid their hair under a scarf or in a bun when they were working. Metal hair curlers were scarcely used because there was a shortage of metal during that time but women were using various recycled rags to curl their hair.

Putting one´s hair in victory rolls for a day at work also meant that when they loosened it in the evening they got the then popular peekaboo hairstyle of Veronica Lake. The rolls (and the hairspray) can create really adorable waves on hair.
Nošení victory rolls přes den v práci též znamenalo možnost si vlasy rozpustit, čímž se vytvořil účes ve stylu Veronicy Lake.  Roličky (a lak na vlasy) mohou totiž vytvořit na vlasech překrásné vlny.
